It was a decent addition to the series, though I had a bit of trouble getting into the story. There's not much in the way of unexpected plot twists or character development. It's just a simple continuation of the series.I don't particularly care for reading through the flashback scenes, since they're all italicized. Maybe make them separate chapters, so we don't have to read through 20 pages of italics?One thing that did amuse me, however, is that the author likes to use numbers, but doesn't seem to be able to grasp them very well. As an engineer, this sort of thing tends to grab my attention. This was the case in the previous books, as well. For example, take a look at the following passage:"There were just short of two thousand survivors in total. That wasn't a lot when I took Vesperia's population of 550,000 people into account. In fact, it wasn't even a thousandth of a percent." Well, that's not right, considering a thousandth of a percent of 550k would be 5.5 people...There was another passage with really messed up room sizes, but it looks like it may have been edited out of the text since I read the book last week. I can't find it, anyway. I'm thinking that the author may be thinking in feet and then just changing the word "feet" to "meters," so it sounds less American.Overall, it's a decent book, but nothing special. The first 8 books could easily have been condensed into 3 or 4, which would have been better. I suppose you don't make as much money that way, though... Still going strong and still my favorite series from Varnell! I appreciate the pacing and the slice of life sections as much as the action scenes since it assists in bringing the characters to life. The author's use of anime/manga tropes is done in such a way as to add rather than detract from the story. I also felt like the flashback scenes were either shorter or less frequent in this novel. I enjoy the back story and foreshadowing but sometimes less is more and I feel like this volume hit that sweet spot. Props!
